Zimbabwe and South Korea forge stronger ties to boost Agricultural Advancement

Zimbabwe is poised to embark on a journey of strengthened diplomatic ties as it prepares to participate in the upcoming South Korea-Africa Summit scheduled for June 4th to 5th, 2024, in Seoul. This summit represents a significant milestone in bolstering bilateral relations between Zimbabwe and South Korea, with a particular focus on enhancing economic cooperation and advancing agricultural development initiatives.

Officials within Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development express optimism about the opportunities presented by the summit. They view it as a platform to explore new avenues for collaboration, deepen trade relations, and cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships across various sectors. One key objective is to leverage the summit to conduct sideline meetings, particularly with South Korea’s Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs, to address pressing issues such as food security and nutrition.

A major focal point for Zimbabwe’s engagement with South Korea is its ambition to reduce its reliance on rice imports, which have surged over the past decade. Currently, Zimbabwe’s annual rice consumption stands at 120,000 metric tonnes, with imports accounting for over 70 percent of this demand. However, the South Korea-Africa Rice Belt Project, launched in July 2023 with an investment of US$80 million, offers promising prospects for enhancing rice production in Africa, including Zimbabwe. This initiative aims to introduce high-yield South Korean rice seed varieties and advanced agricultural technologies, paving the way for a more self-sustainable rice production process.

Zimbabwe’s proactive stance towards agricultural development aligns with recent discussions on collaborative efforts under the New Rice for Africa (NERICA) initiative. This initiative seeks to introduce resilient rice seed varieties capable of withstanding drought and diseases, thereby boosting rice production across the continent. A recent meeting between Vice President Chiwenga and Japanese Ambassador to Zimbabwe Yamanaka Shinichi in February highlighted the commitment to advancing agricultural resilience through initiatives like NERICA.

As Zimbabwe looks towards the future, the collaboration with South Korea stands as a testament to its dedication to fostering economic growth and development through strategic partnerships and innovative agricultural solutions. This concerted effort is poised to create a more sustainable and self-sufficient future for Zimbabwe, paving the way for enhanced prosperity and resilience in the face of global challenges.
