On Tuesday, Kenya urged a comprehensive review of its foreign policy to ensure it remains relevant and effective in promoting national interests and values. Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, emphasised that global trends are reshaping Kenya’s foreign policy landscape, necessitating updates to the 2024 Foreign Policy document.
Mudavadi addressed the opening of a colloquium dedicated to revising Kenya’s foreign policy, stating that the document, originally published in 2014, must now accommodate significant global shifts that have occurred over the past decade. He underlined the importance of adapting the policy to maintain its effectiveness in advancing Kenya’s national interests and values.
“The deployment of soft power—encompassing cultural diplomacy, educational exchanges, and international media—is increasingly influencing global perceptions and strengthening Kenya’s international standing,” Mudavadi remarked. He stressed that the revised policy must incorporate these emerging trends and address how they can be leveraged to safeguard and promote Kenya’s interests.
Mudavadi noted that Kenya’s national interests have expanded as the country aims to play a more prominent role in international affairs. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been restructured to better align with the government’s domestic and foreign policy priorities.
The review process will also emphasise open governance and public participation. Mudavadi called on the participants to use their expertise to develop a policy that advances Kenya’s global position while addressing national, regional, and global peace and security priorities.
He concluded by urging the team to reflect on past achievements, assess current strategies, and work collectively towards a future where Kenya continues to thrive and lead on the global stage.
