The Angolan Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosted a second ministerial meeting on security and peace in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Tuesday, with high-level representatives from the DRC and Rwanda in attendance. The meeting, which took place in Luanda, aimed to address the ongoing conflict in the eastern DRC.
Angolan Foreign Minister Tete Antonio expressed optimism that the discussions would lead to a consensus and produce concrete proposals for restoring peace and ending hostilities in the region. Despite the constructive tone of the meeting, no official information regarding specific outcomes has been released.
The latest meeting follows up on a previous session held on March 21 in Luanda. That session underscored the need for sustainable peace, economic development, and social welfare in the eastern DRC. Agreements from that meeting included a call for the cessation of hostilities, the implementation of a ceasefire, and the disengagement of military forces.
On the same day, Angolan President João Lourenço met with Therese Kayikwamba Wagner and Olivier Nduhungirehe, the foreign ministers of the DRC and Rwanda, respectively. Lourenço, who also serves as the African Union-appointed facilitator for dialogue between the two nations, is spearheading efforts to mediate and promote discussions aimed at resolving the conflict.
As the situation remains fluid, further developments are anticipated from ongoing diplomatic engagements in the region.
