Dr. Maurine Musie, a senior lecturer and trailblazing researcher from the University of Pretoria, has been chosen to represent South Africa at the prestigious BRICS Young Scientist Forum. This influential gathering, taking place in Russia in November, unites young scientists from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to tackle global challenges through science and innovation.
Dr. Musie is celebrated for her significant contributions to midwifery and maternal health, with a focus on enhancing healthcare access in underserved communities. Her pioneering work aims to address critical issues in obstetric care by utilizing mobile health technology for the early detection and management of high-risk pregnancies. This research holds particular importance for BRICS nations, where disparities in healthcare access can drastically affect maternal and neonatal outcomes.
With her background as the youngest PhD holder in the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Musie brings both expertise and a strong commitment to improving healthcare standards. She is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the South African Young Scientist Academy and the Society of Midwives, and collaborates with the International Confederation of Midwives, making her a key figure in advancing midwifery on both regional and global stages.
In her upcoming presentation at the forum, Dr. Musie will share her insights on integrating mobile applications and telemedicine into obstetric care. She emphasizes that collaboration across BRICS nations is essential for addressing shared healthcare challenges and enabling technology exchange to improve healthcare outcomes.
Dr. Musie hopes her involvement will inspire more South African scientists to engage in international platforms. “I aim to showcase that South African researchers can make a significant impact on the global stage,” she shared, expressing optimism that her work will foster partnerships that enhance local healthcare initiatives.
