LAGOS, (The Southern African Times) – Authorities in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, have raised alarm over a possible third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, following a recent increase in positive cases.
Governor of Lagos state Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced on Sunday in a statement restrictions and sanctions after disclosing that the state’s daily confirmed cases had shot up recently.
Figures from the Nigeria Center for Disease Control show the country has seen increase in COVID-19 cases for two weeks ending on July 4.
Until Sunday, 168,552 cases have been confirmed in the country, and Lagos continues to be the epicenter of the pandemic with 60,366 cases.
The increase may be connected to the careless attitude of air passengers from countries in “high-risk” zones and the complacency among residents to follow the protective protocols issued by the government, Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor said there should be compulsory use of masks in all public places, in addition to social distancing, compulsory temperature checks, provisions for hand-washing and sanitizers, and a maximum of 50 percent occupancy in enclosed spaces.
