Namibian President Calls for Calm Ahead of Landmark Elections

Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba has issued a public appeal for peaceful participation in the nation’s upcoming 8th Presidential and National Assembly elections, set to take place on 27 November 2024. In a nationwide address, Mbumba emphasised the pivotal nature of the elections in shaping Namibia’s democratic trajectory and urged all eligible citizens to cast their votes responsibly.

The elections will determine Namibia’s fifth President and the composition of its eighth National Assembly. President Mbumba described the act of voting as a fundamental expression of patriotism and a commitment to democratic development, underscoring the need for calm and respect during the process.

“Your participation is a patriotic contribution to the consolidation of our democracy and the development of our motherland. I appeal to you to do so in a calm manner that is peaceful and respectful of one another, the relevant authorities and the laws of our Republic,” he stated.

Mbumba also reflected on the trials faced by the country over the past year, particularly the unexpected demise of former President Hage Geingob, a moment he described as a severe test of Namibia’s institutional resilience. Despite these challenges, he lauded the robustness of the nation’s democratic processes, which, he affirmed, remain steadfast and exemplary.

“Our processes, systems and institutions were severely tested and remain firm. Thus we continue the culture of free, fair and peaceful elections,” Mbumba said, commending the conduct of political parties and stakeholders throughout the campaign period. “The climate in which you campaigned and freely expressed your views in favour of your political parties is a demonstration of the strength of the democratic foundations of the Namibian House.”

Further, the President expressed confidence in the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN), urging it to uphold its mandate with fairness, impartiality, and integrity.

Namibia’s political landscape has been largely stable since gaining independence in 1990, with the South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO) party maintaining dominance. However, the upcoming election is expected to draw heightened scrutiny amid a shifting socio-economic context and an increasingly vocal opposition.

While the President’s address underlines Namibia’s commitment to its democratic ethos, attention will turn to voter turnout and the conduct of the polls as critical indicators of the nation’s political health.
