Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, chair of ECOWAS, reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to diplomacy in facilitating the return of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to constitutional rule. Speaking during a meeting with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Abuja, Tinubu stressed the importance of reintegrating the three nations without further punishing innocent citizens.
Tinubu highlighted ECOWAS’ dedication to democratic principles and mutual respect, stating, “We will not tolerate unconstitutional governments.” He noted that despite the military juntas’ reluctance to produce clear transition timelines, the regional bloc remains open to fostering peaceful negotiations and democratic restoration.
President Steinmeier lauded ECOWAS’ efforts, emphasizing the security and economic implications of reintegrating the nations into the bloc. His visit also spotlighted the Nigeria-Germany energy partnership and broader economic cooperation within West Africa.
Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger had earlier declared intentions to exit ECOWAS following sanctions, which were subsequently lifted. The reintegration of these nations remains pivotal to regional stability, underscoring ECOWAS’ reliance on diplomacy as its guiding principle.
