HARARE, (The Southern African Times) – Zimbabwe’s Vice President and Health Minister Constantino Chiwenga is the person to receive the COVID-19 vaccine in the country. The Zimbabwe vaccination program was officially launched Thursday morning in the Matabeleland region.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa Thursday tweeted saying, “Thank you to Vice President and Health Minister Constantino Chiwenga for showing Zimbabwe that this vaccine is safe for all our people. This is a historic moment in our country’s fight against this virus.”
Matabeleland region is set to receive the vaccines Thursday and Friday ahead of phase one vaccination of frontline workers expected to start in the area on Monday.
About 49, 000 health workers and thousands of other high-risk frontline staff are set to be vaccinated under the first phase.
This is after the delivery of the first batch of the Sinopharm vaccines from China on Monday. The vaccination program targets 10 million people in three phases to complete the exercise.
Zimbabwe has registered 35,423 coronavirus cases and 1,418 deaths.
