Ndugulile Elected as WHO Regional Director for Africa

Dr Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile of Tanzania has been elected as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa. Ndugulile, who previously served as Tanzania’s Minister for Information, Communication and Information Technology, as well as Deputy Minister for Health, emerged victorious during the 74th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa, held in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo.

Ndugulile’s election marks a new chapter for the African continent at a critical juncture, succeeding Dr Matshidiso Moeti, who has held the esteemed position since 2015. The election, conducted on Tuesday, saw Ndugulile surpass formidable competitors, including Boureima Hama Sambo of Niger, Richard Mihigo of Rwanda, and Ibrahima Soce Fall of Senegal. His victory is being lauded as a triumph not only for Tanzania but for the wider African community.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania was among the first to congratulate Ndugulile, expressing her “heartfelt congratulations” via her official X platform. She underscored the pride that Ndugulile’s achievement brings to Tanzania and the promise it holds for the African continent. “I am confident that your expertise and experience in the health sector will enable Africa to have a vital voice on the global stage in tackling health challenges for millions of our people across the continent,” President Hassan declared.

Ndugulile’s appointment comes at a time when the African continent is grappling with a host of pressing public health challenges, including the recent outbreak of mpox, a viral illness caused by the monkeypox virus. His experience in health administration and governance, honed through his ministerial roles, is anticipated to be pivotal in steering the continent through these crises.

The election of Ndugulile, a figure with a robust background in both health and communication sectors, signals a renewed commitment to addressing the myriad of health issues facing Africa with both expertise and an enhanced capacity for public engagement. His tenure as Regional Director will undoubtedly be watched closely, as the continent and the world at large look to him to bring decisive leadership to the WHO’s African operations.

As Africa continues to navigate the complexities of emerging health threats, Ndugulile’s leadership is expected to strengthen the continent’s voice within the global health discourse. His role will be instrumental in advocating for equitable access to healthcare, fortifying public health infrastructure, and addressing the socio-economic determinants that exacerbate health disparities across the region.

Dr Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile’s election is a moment of considerable importance, both for Tanzania and for the future of public health in Africa. His journey to this eminent position, and the leadership he is expected to provide, reflect the aspirations of a continent that is increasingly asserting its place in global health governance.
