Thermax Babcock & Wilcox Energy Solutions Limited (TBWES), a subsidiary of the renowned Indian firm Thermax Group, has secured a substantial order valued at Rs. 513 crore (approximately $62 million USD) from a leading industrial conglomerate. This contract is part of an ambitious initiative to set up a 600 MW greenfield energy project in Botswana.
Under the terms of the agreement, TBWES will deliver two 550 tonnes per hour circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC) boilers over a span of 23 months. These boilers are a critical component of the first phase of the project, aimed at establishing a 300 MW power station. The power generated from this station will be sold to the national utility power company, aiding Botswana in meeting its growing energy demands.
Ashish Bhandari, Managing Director and CEO of Thermax, expressed his enthusiasm about the project. “We are delighted to win the order to support and accelerate power generation efforts in Botswana. Our expertise in designing and manufacturing boilers that focus on lower emissions, reduced operating costs, and higher reliability has led to this win. We look forward to contributing to the broader energy landscape in Southern Africa and providing our services globally.”
TBWES will oversee the design, engineering, manufacturing, testing, supply, and supervision of the erection and commissioning of these boilers. Additionally, they will conduct performance testing to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the boilers.
Circulating fluidised bed combustion (CFBC) boilers are known for their ability to burn a wide range of fuels while maintaining low emissions and high efficiency. This technology will be instrumental in providing a sustainable energy solution for Botswana, aligning with global trends towards cleaner and more efficient power generation.
Thermax Limited, the parent company of TBWES, is a prominent player in the energy and environment sectors, offering a comprehensive portfolio of solutions including clean air, clean energy, clean water, and chemical solutions. With 14 manufacturing facilities across India, Europe, and Southeast Asia, and 42 subsidiaries worldwide, Thermax is well-positioned to deliver high-quality energy solutions.
The company’s services division also provides renovation and modernisation solutions for existing boilers and heaters, ensuring that older systems can be upgraded to meet contemporary environmental and efficiency standards.
This project marks a significant step for Botswana in its journey towards energy self-sufficiency and sustainability. As the country continues to develop its infrastructure and industrial capabilities, reliable and efficient energy sources will be crucial. The collaboration with Thermax Group not only brings advanced technology to the region but also promises long-term benefits in terms of reduced emissions and operational costs.
For Southern Africa, this project represents a promising advancement in regional energy cooperation and development. The success of this initiative could pave the way for similar projects across the continent, promoting sustainable growth and energy security.
