Ericsson has appointed Siseko Ngxola as Head of its South African operations, signalling a continued strategic focus on one of the continent’s most developed telecommunications markets. The announcement, made on 23 March 2026, places a locally rooted executive with international experience at the centre of the company’s regional ambitions.
Ngxola brings more than two decades of experience in the telecommunications sector, spanning commercial, technical and strategic roles across multiple markets. His career trajectory includes senior responsibilities in enterprise sales, mobile networks and key account management, with professional experience in the United Kingdom, Finland and parts of the Middle East. This blend of local grounding and global exposure reflects broader industry trends in which African leadership increasingly navigates both domestic priorities and international technological ecosystems.
Prior to his appointment, Ngxola served as Key Account Manager at Ericsson South Africa and was part of the company’s local leadership team from December 2024. His elevation follows the departure of his predecessor and comes at a time when the telecommunications sector in South Africa is undergoing significant transformation, shaped by expanding data demand, infrastructure investment and evolving regulatory frameworks.
Majda Lahlou Kassi, Head of Ericsson West and Southern Africa, stated that Ngxola’s appointment reflects the company’s emphasis on continuity and local expertise. She noted that his familiarity with customers and operational dynamics positions him to guide Ericsson’s engagement in South Africa’s digital development.
In his remarks, Ngxola emphasised the role of connectivity in enabling economic participation and social inclusion. He indicated that his focus would be on strengthening partnerships and supporting the delivery of network solutions aligned with the country’s digital priorities. These include ongoing developments in 5G deployment, enterprise connectivity and the expansion of digital services.
South Africa remains a key telecommunications hub within the African continent, with operators and infrastructure providers playing a central role in regional connectivity. Ericsson’s presence in the country forms part of a broader footprint across Africa, where the company collaborates with mobile network operators and public sector stakeholders to expand access and modernise networks. According to industry data from organisations such as the GSMA, mobile technologies continue to contribute significantly to economic activity across Sub Saharan Africa, reinforcing the importance of leadership decisions within major infrastructure firms.
Ngxola’s appointment also reflects a wider shift within multinational corporations operating in Africa, where leadership structures increasingly incorporate executives with lived experience of local markets. This approach is often framed as a response to the need for contextually informed decision making, particularly in environments shaped by diverse socio economic conditions and rapidly evolving technological adoption.
While Ericsson’s strategic direction in South Africa remains aligned with its global priorities in network innovation and digital infrastructure, the appointment underscores the importance of leadership that can engage with both local realities and continental dynamics. In this context, Ngxola’s tenure is likely to be evaluated not only by commercial performance but also by the extent to which technological advancement translates into broader societal and economic outcomes.
