The South African Border Management Authority (BMA) has ramped up its security measures at all ports of entry in anticipation of the national and provincial elections set to take place on Wednesday. This heightened vigilance was announced in a statement by the BMA on Monday.
“With just two days before South Africa’s national and provincial elections, the Border Management Authority is on high alert at all ports of entry to monitor movements,” read the BMA statement.
Over the weekend, the BMA detained 28 Bangladeshi nationals at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. The individuals had arrived from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, without proper documentation. This incident underscores the critical role of border security in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process.
Michael Masiapato, Commissioner of the BMA, emphasised the necessity of international cooperation in verifying the legitimacy of visas. He urged foreign missions and embassies to enhance their collaboration with South African authorities.
“This operation underscores the importance of our continuous efforts to secure our borders and ensure that all entrants comply with our legal requirements,” said Masiapato. He highlighted that effective detection systems and stringent border controls are vital in safeguarding the nation’s security.
In addition to bolstering border security, law enforcement agencies have deployed substantial resources nationwide to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections. This includes escorting ballot papers to various locations and securing national key points.
The increased security measures reflect the government’s commitment to a fair and orderly electoral process. As South Africans prepare to cast their votes, the BMA’s proactive stance aims to reassure the public of their safety and the integrity of the electoral system.
