Shaun Flores is not your average orator. With two successful TEDx talks under his belt, a lecture at Roehampton University, and appearances on various TV shows, Shaun has become an influential voice on issues of education, mental health, and diversity. Recently, he has been invited to present a third TEDx talk on psychedelic treatment, a controversial but promising field of study that could revolutionize the way we treat mental health.
Psychedelic treatment involves the use of substances like psilocybin (found in magic mushrooms), LSD, and MDMA (commonly known as ecstasy) to induce altered states of consciousness that can help people overcome mental health problems like depression, anxiety, and PTSD. While this may sound like a recipe for disaster, studies have shown that psychedelic treatment can be safe and effective when done under the supervision of trained professionals.
Shaun believes that psychedelic treatment could be the key to unlocking a mental health revolution. “We’ve been stuck in the same old paradigm for too long,” he says. “We’ve been relying on drugs like Prozac and Xanax to treat mental health problems, but these drugs only provide temporary relief and often come with unpleasant side effects. Psychedelic treatment offers a new way forward, one that is based on the latest scientific research and the ancient wisdom of indigenous cultures.”
While there is still much to learn about psychedelic treatment, the early results are promising. A recent study by Imperial College London found that psilocybin treatment was more effective than traditional antidepressants in treating depression. Another study by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) found that MDMA-assisted psychotherapy was effective in treating PTSD in veterans and survivors of sexual assault.
Of course, there are still many skeptics who view psychedelic treatment as a dangerous and reckless approach to mental health. Some worry that it could lead to addiction, psychosis, or other serious problems. However, Shaun believes that these concerns are overblown and that psychedelic treatment can be done safely when done with the proper precautions.
“We’re not talking about people dropping acid at a party,” he says. “We’re talking about carefully controlled settings with trained professionals who know how to guide people through these experiences. It’s a very different approach to drug use than what most people are used to.”
Shaun also believes that psychedelic treatment has the potential to address some of the underlying social and cultural factors that contribute to mental health problems, such as trauma, inequality, and disconnection. “We need to think about mental health in a more holistic way,” he says. “We need to address the root causes of these problems, not just treat the symptoms.”
While it may take some time for psychedelic treatment to gain wider acceptance, Shaun is optimistic about its potential to transform the field of mental health. “We’re at a turning point,” he says. “We have the opportunity to do something truly revolutionary, to break free from the old ways of thinking and embrace a new approach that is based on compassion, wisdom, and science. It’s an exciting time to be alive.”
Shaun’s TEDx talk on psychedelic treatment had sparked controversy and debate, but it could also have been the beginning of a new era in mental health. While there were still many unknowns and risks associated with psychedelic treatment, the potential benefits were too great to ignore. As Shaun had said, “It was time to start thinking outside the box and exploring new possibilities. Who knew what we might discover?”
