Scatec ASA, a leading renewable energy company based in Oslo, Norway, has been awarded preferred bidder status for a 288 MW solar project in South Africa’s seventh round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP).
The project is set to operate under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) upon completion. According to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, commercial close for REIPPPP Bid Window 7 is anticipated in the second half of 2025.
Scatec will hold a 50.9% equity stake in the project and will be responsible for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services, as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) and asset management services.
This development underscores Scatec’s ongoing commitment to South Africa’s renewable energy sector. The company has a notable presence in the country, including the recent commissioning of the Kenhardt Solar Power Complex Station in December 2023.
Scatec’s CEO, Terje Pilskog, remarked, “This marks another significant achievement for Scatec in South Africa and for the renewable energy transition in the country. Today’s award reaffirms our standing as a leading renewable energy player in South Africa. We applaud the South African government’s commitment and dedication to the renewable energy procurement programmes.”
The South African government continues to advance its renewable energy initiatives through programmes like REIPPPP, aiming to enhance energy security and promote sustainable development. Scatec’s involvement in these projects contributes to the country’s efforts to diversify its energy mix and reduce carbon emissions.
