Kenmare Resources Maintains Operations at Mozambique Mine Amid Local Unrest

Kenmare Resources plc, a prominent producer of titanium minerals and zircon, has confirmed that its mining operations at the Moma Titanium Minerals Mine in northern Mozambique continue without disruption, despite recent regional protests. The company, which plays a significant role in the global supply of industrial minerals, has assured stakeholders that measures are in place to ensure the safety of its personnel and facilities.

Contrary to circulating reports, Kenmare has clarified that its senior management remains on-site, and there have been no evacuations. Moreover, the company has confirmed that no injuries have been reported among its employees. This statement comes as part of efforts to dispel rumours about the potential impact of the unrest on the mine’s operations.

The protests, which stem from regional socio-economic grievances, have largely been peaceful. However, a minority of individuals involved have engaged in civil disorder and criminal acts, including commandeering and damaging vehicles. Despite these incidents, Kenmare has reported that several of the affected vehicles have been returned, and there has been no damage to company infrastructure or facilities.

Kenmare’s proactive approach includes ongoing dialogue with stakeholders and collaboration with local authorities. An increased police presence in the region has helped to stabilise the situation over the weekend, providing a sense of calm and order to an area affected by sporadic unrest.

The company’s commitment to its workforce and surrounding communities remains unwavering. Kenmare is actively monitoring developments and adjusting its operations as necessary to prioritise safety while maintaining the continuity of its mining activities. The Moma Mine is a vital economic driver in the region, employing a significant number of local residents and contributing to Mozambique’s economy through exports.

Kenmare Resources has reiterated its commitment to working constructively with the local community to address underlying issues that may have contributed to the unrest. The company has a long-standing reputation for investing in local development initiatives, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects, which are designed to improve the quality of life for nearby communities.

The Moma Mine, one of the world’s largest producers of ilmenite and rutile, is central to Kenmare’s operations. These minerals are essential for producing pigment, used in a wide range of applications, including paints, plastics, and paper. The company also produces zircon, which is vital for the ceramics industry.

Stakeholders, including investors and local partners, have expressed their support for Kenmare’s efforts to maintain stability and ensure the uninterrupted supply of critical minerals to global markets. With a resilient operational model and a focus on sustainability, Kenmare Resources remains a key player in the mining sector, navigating challenges with an emphasis on safety, community engagement, and operational excellence.

As the situation in northern Mozambique evolves, Kenmare continues to update stakeholders and reaffirm its commitment to transparency. The company remains optimistic about a swift resolution to the unrest and stands firm in its dedication to its employees, partners, and host communities.
