Scania Southern Africa has inaugurated a new Regional Product Centre (RPC) in Aeroton, Johannesburg, marking a significant milestone in its three-decade presence in the South African truck market. This state-of-the-art facility is integrated with the assembly plant established in 2003, underscoring Scania’s commitment to growth, sustainability, and operational efficiency in the region.
The RPC is designed to enhance the production process by eliminating previous bottlenecks in the flow of parts. Components now move seamlessly from pre-assembly to the main assembly line, culminating in rigorous quality control checks. Each completed truck undergoes mandatory brake inspections to ensure compliance with South African regulations, reflecting Scania’s dedication to safety and quality.
Sustainability is a core focus of the new facility, which recycles 98% of its waste, aligning with Scania’s global mission to drive the transition towards sustainable transport solutions. This initiative minimises environmental impact while delivering high-quality products that offer excellent value for money.
The assembly plant currently has the capacity to produce 3,200 trucks and buses per year. While truck models are fully assembled on-site, bus chassis are completed before being sent to industry partners for body fittings. The assembly line’s flexibility allows for the simultaneous production of multiple models, with the potential to scale up production output by adding staff and shifts to meet increasing demand.
By investing in this advanced facility, Scania aims to strengthen its position as a leader in the South African transport sector, ensuring innovation, sustainability, and superior service for years to come. This development not only enhances Scania’s operational capabilities but also contributes positively to the South African economy, reflecting a deep-seated commitment to the region’s future.
