Mali’s transitional government has declared a “state of national disaster” in response to widespread flooding that has ravaged the nation, displacing thousands and affecting tens of thousands more. The severe flooding, which has been precipitated by relentless heavy rainfall since the onset of the rainy season in June, has left 47,374 people displaced or impacted, as reported by the government.
In an extraordinary session held on Friday, the transitional president, Assimi Goita, sanctioned an emergency allocation of 4 billion CFA francs (approximately 6.8 million U.S. dollars) to address the escalating humanitarian crisis. The financial envelope is intended to facilitate immediate relief efforts and provide essential resources to the afflicted regions.
According to the decree issued following the cabinet meeting, the declaration of a state of national disaster is designed to enable the government to mobilise the full spectrum of its resources to assist those in dire need. Daoud Aly Mohammedine, Mali’s Minister of Security and Civil Protection, underscored the significance of this decision, describing it as pivotal for orchestrating a comprehensive response to the multifaceted disasters unfolding across the country.
“The declaration of a national disaster is a critical measure,” Mohammedine stated, “as it empowers us to deploy all available state resources to protect and assist our citizens in these trying times.”
Since the commencement of the rainy season, an estimated 7,077 households have been directly impacted by the floods, underscoring the extensive scale of the disaster. The government’s swift response reflects the urgency of the situation, as the affected regions face mounting challenges, including displacement, food insecurity, and potential outbreaks of waterborne diseases.
This national emergency exacerbates an already precarious situation in Mali, a country that has been grappling with political instability and ongoing security challenges. The government’s response to the flooding will likely be scrutinised as it strives to provide timely and effective relief to its citizens amidst an increasingly complex landscape of national crises.
