Former Zimbabwean Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko Passes Away

Zimbabwe has lost one of its most complex and polarising political figures, as Phelekezela Mphoko, former Second Vice-President, diplomat, and businessman, has passed away at the age of 84. The news of his death was confirmed by Presidential Spokesman George Charamba, who expressed condolences on behalf of the government and the people of Zimbabwe.

Born on 11 June 1940, Mphoko carved a unique trajectory in Zimbabwe’s political and diplomatic spheres. A former military commander, he was deeply entrenched in the liberation struggle before transitioning into public service. He served as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Russia, Botswana, and South Africa, demonstrating a nuanced grasp of global diplomacy.

Mphoko rose to the pinnacle of national politics when he was appointed as one of Zimbabwe’s Vice-Presidents in December 2014, alongside Emmerson Mnangagwa. Representing the ZAPU wing of the ZANU-PF unity accord, he was also tasked with overseeing the Ministry of National Healing, Peace, and Reconciliation, a role that underscored his commitment to addressing Zimbabwe’s historical wounds.

However, his tenure was not without controversy. From his stay in a luxury hotel at public expense to allegations of political indecision, Mphoko often found himself in the spotlight for reasons beyond his official duties. His time as Vice-President came to an end in November 2017, following the dramatic fall of President Robert Mugabe and the dissolution of the cabinet by his successor, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Despite his tumultuous political career, Mphoko’s diplomatic achievements remain a significant part of his legacy. His ambassadorships in key countries underscored his role in shaping Zimbabwe’s foreign policy during critical moments in its history.

Mphoko survived by his wife, Laurinda Mphoko, and their three children—Siqokoqela, Sikhumbuzo, and Siduduzo. Known for his devotion to his family, he was described by those close to him as a dedicated patriarch who balanced the demands of public life with the responsibilities of home.

Reactions to Mphoko’s death have been mixed. Some have celebrated his contributions to Zimbabwe’s independence and diplomacy, while others have criticised his role in a political landscape often marked by polarity.

As Zimbabwe reflects on the life and legacy of Phelekezela Mphoko, his story serves as a reminder of the complexity of leadership in a country still grappling with its post-colonial identity. Mphoko’s death closes yet another chapter in Zimbabwe’s history, leaving behind a legacy that will be debated for years to come.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
