As of 06:00 on May 15, Forensic Pathology Services have identified 18 of the workers killed in the collapse of a partially built building in George. The tragic incident, which occurred eight days ago, has resulted in a death toll of 33, with 19 individuals still unaccounted for.
Of the 18 identified victims, seven are South African nationals. The remaining 11 include five from Malawi, three from Zimbabwe, two from Mozambique, and one from Lesotho.
Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi is scheduled to visit the site on May 16 to assess the situation and oversee the ongoing efforts to account for the missing individuals.
The collapse has prompted a significant emergency response, with rescue and recovery operations continuing around the clock. Authorities are also conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent similar incidents in the future.
