KKR sign Muzarabani as Mustafizur replacement after World Cup surge

Kolkata Knight Riders have turned to Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani to fill the gap left by Mustafizur Rahman, a signing that highlights how quickly IPL franchises move when form emerges on the global stage.

The Zimbabwe seamer arrives after a strong ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign that saw him establish himself as one of the tournament’s most effective pace bowlers. Muzarabani claimed 13 wickets in six matches as Zimbabwe topped their group and reached the Super Eight stage, producing spells that combined bounce, control and pressure in the powerplay.

Blessing Muzarabani has officially joined the Kolkata Knight Riders

KKR’s need for a replacement arose after the franchise released Mustafizur Rahman in December, despite purchasing the Bangladesh left arm seamer for INR 9.2 crore at the 2026 IPL auction. Muzarabani offers a contrasting skill set. Rather than relying on cutters and deception, the tall right arm quick uses steep bounce and hard lengths to force mistakes, an approach that can be particularly disruptive on surfaces where swing is limited.

The timing of the move also affects Muzarabani’s franchise commitments elsewhere. The Zimbabwe international had been due to feature for Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League, but he has withdrawn from the competition after securing the IPL deal. The PSL begins on March 26, while the IPL starts two days later, creating another scheduling clash between two of the world’s major T20 leagues.

For Kolkata, the signing adds variety to their pace attack while bringing in a bowler currently operating with rhythm and confidence. Muzarabani’s height and high release point create angles that differ from many conventional T20 seamers, and his ability to attack the stumps while extracting bounce gives captains another tactical option across different IPL venues.

The move also illustrates how performances at global tournaments can rapidly translate into franchise opportunities, particularly for players from nations outside cricket’s traditional commercial powerhouses. Muzarabani’s World Cup impact has now opened the door to one of the sport’s most visible stages, and Kolkata will hope that the form forged under international pressure carries into the IPL season.
