Namibia has issued a commemorative 60-Namibian-dollar banknote to honour the late former President Hage Geingob, recognising his exceptional contributions to the nation. The banknote was unveiled on 5 March 2025, in Windhoek, by President Nangolo Mbumba.
The denomination of 60 dollars symbolises Geingob’s six decades of dedicated service to Namibia, spanning his time in exile, his return, and his leadership in an independent Namibia. Bank of Namibia Governor Johannes Gawaxab highlighted that this number carries profound symbolic meaning, reflecting Geingob’s extensive commitment to the country throughout these decades.
This collector’s item, a one-off print, will serve as legal tender. It stands as a lasting tribute to Geingob’s vision and contributions to Namibia, embodying his role as a “nation builder,” as noted by President Mbumba during the unveiling ceremony.
In 2020, to celebrate Namibia’s 30th anniversary of independence, the Bank of Namibia issued its first-ever commemorative banknote, the 30 Namibian dollar note, printed on a polymer substrate for added durability. This note features the faces of Namibian founding President Sam Nujoma, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, and Geingob, symbolising the smooth transfer of power and the legacy of peace, stability, and progress.
The central bank has announced plans to introduce a new series of banknotes and coins in June, incorporating the latest security features to ensure they remain modern, resilient, and secure.
