In a landmark development for South African politics, the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has announced the formation of a government of national unity (GNU) following the recent general elections. This unprecedented coalition brings together ten political parties with seats in Parliament, reflecting a broad spectrum of political ideologies united by a common commitment to national priorities.
“Following two weeks of intense engagements, 10 of the 18 parties with seats in the National Assembly have signed the GNU Statement of Intent, indicating their willingness to cooperate to put the people of South Africa first,” the ANC declared in a statement on Saturday.
The coalition comprises the ANC, Democratic Alliance, Patriotic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party, GOOD, Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, Vryheidsfront Plus, United Democratic Movement, Rise Mzansi, and Al Jama-ah. Collectively, these parties garnered over 70 percent of the vote in the 2024 elections, ensuring robust representation and a formidable mandate to govern.
The ANC has outlined that all coalition partners have agreed to adhere to the foundational principles specified in the Statement of Intent, committing to work collaboratively towards shared objectives. The agreement signifies a historic moment, marking the first time in South Africa’s post-apartheid history that the ANC has not held an outright majority in the National Assembly. The ANC secured 159 out of the 400 seats, falling short of the 50 percent threshold necessary to maintain its 30-year-long dominance in the lower house of Parliament.
Despite this shift, the formation of the GNU underscores a collective resolve to address the pressing needs of South Africans through a unified approach. The ANC’s willingness to engage with a diverse array of political entities indicates a strategic pivot towards inclusivity and broader consensus-building in governance.
The ANC also conveyed its ongoing dialogue with the remaining parties that have yet to join the GNU, hinting at the potential for an even more expansive coalition in the future.
The announcement of the GNU follows the general elections held on 29 May, a pivotal event that has reshaped the political landscape of South Africa. The coalition’s formation is anticipated to bring stability and concerted efforts in tackling the nation’s economic challenges, social inequalities, and other critical issues.
As South Africa navigates this new political era, the GNU’s success will hinge on the cooperative spirit and mutual dedication of its diverse members to the collective good of the nation.
