Unofficial Results Show Erdogan Leading in Turkish Election with Narrow Margin

ISTANBUL, TURKEY - MAY 26: People watch on from a cafe window as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey addresses supporters during a campaign rally on May 26, 2023 in Istanbul, Turkey. President Erdogan was forced into a runoff election when neither he nor his main challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu of the Republican People's Party (CHP), received more than 50 percent of the vote on the May 14 election. According to unofficial results released by both the state-run Anadolu Agency and the opposition ANKA news agency, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is leading with a narrow margin in the highly anticipated Turkish election. The state-run Anadolu Agency reports Erdogan securing 53.4 percent of the vote, while his main challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, is trailing at 46.6 percent. However, ANKA news agency’s separate data reveals Kilicdaroglu leading by a slight margin with 50.02 percent compared to Erdogan’s 49.98 percent.

With approximately 82.6 percent of ballot boxes opened, the election results remain highly dynamic and subject to change. The opposition ANKA news agency reports a higher percentage of ballot boxes opened, standing at 83.9 percent. These figures indicate a close and fiercely contested election.

The voter turnout has been exceptional, with an estimated 85.24 percent of eligible voters participating in the election, according to the Anadolu Agency. This significant level of engagement underscores the importance of this election for the Turkish people and the future direction of their country.

The ruling AK Party spokesperson hailed the unofficial results as a demonstration of strong support for President Erdogan. The spokesperson emphasized that these initial results indicate the confidence of the electorate in Erdogan’s leadership and policies.

In contrast, the spokesperson for Kemal Kilicdaroglu’s party urged the public to embrace the ballot boxes and await the final official results. Speaking at the Republican People’s Party (CHP) headquarters in Ankara, the spokesperson, Faik Oztrak, asserted that the party had received the votes of one out of every two people, suggesting a close contest between the two candidates.

While it is too early to definitively call the election, the race between Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu remains incredibly tight, with each candidate enjoying significant support from their respective bases. The Southern African Times will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the official results are announced.

Please note that these results are unofficial and subject to change as more ballot boxes are opened and counted. The final outcome will be determined by the official authorities responsible for overseeing the election process.

How does the Turkish election hold significance for Africa?

The outcome of the Turkish election holds significant implications for Africa as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aims to further deepen and solidify the growing relationship between Turkey and the continent. Over the past two decades, Erdogan has demonstrated a keen interest in Africa, recognizing the economic, military, and diplomatic opportunities it presents.

While Erdogan has pursued closer ties with Africa throughout his tenure as both prime minister and president, his re-election would likely result in a further strengthening of Ankara’s engagement with the continent. The Turkish president’s proactive approach has fostered a bond that is expected to continue evolving and expanding.

In contrast, his rival, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the leader of the Republican People’s Party, is more focused on Europe and the West, indicating that Africa might not be a top priority for his foreign policy agenda. Kilicdaroglu has emphasized the need to recalibrate relations with the West and revive the accession process to the European Union, suggesting a potential shift away from Erdogan’s African-centric approach. However, the details regarding the impact on Turkey’s relations with key countries worldwide remain unclear.

While Kilicdaroglu’s stance towards Africa may differ, it is important to note that recalibrating Turkey’s foreign policy towards the continent would take time, and any significant changes are unlikely to occur abruptly due to the established foundation of this evolving relationship.

The initiation of stronger cooperation between Turkey and Africa can be traced back to Erdogan’s prime ministership, which began in 2003. Recognizing the potential economic benefits, Erdogan sought to tap into the diverse African market, comprising over 50 countries and a population of more than 1.2 billion people. This led to a substantial increase in Turkey’s annual trade with the continent, rising from $5.4 billion (£4.4 billion) to $34.5 billion between 2003 and 2021, according to data from the Turkish foreign ministry. Key exports to Africa included chemicals, steel, and cereals.

Turkey has actively emphasized that its engagement with Africa is not exploitative but rather aims to establish mutually beneficial partnerships. In 2013, Prime Minister Erdogan, during a visit to Gabon, reassured African nations, stating, “Africa belongs to Africans, we are not here for your gold.”

For Africa, the Turkish election holds significance as it will determine the trajectory of bilateral relations. Erdogan’s re-election would likely result in a continuation and deepening of the existing partnership, leading to further economic opportunities and diplomatic cooperation between Turkey and African nations. However, regardless of the outcome, the recalibration of Turkey’s foreign policy towards Africa is expected to be a gradual process, ensuring the continuity of the strong foundation established in recent years.

As the Turkish election unfolds, Africa will be closely observing the results and subsequent policies to gauge the future direction of the relationship between Turkey and the continent. The Southern African Times will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on the implications of the election for Africa.
