Zambian Retail Customers to Experience Three Hours of Stable Electricity

(230326) -- SOUTHERN PROVINCE, March 26, 2023 (Xinhua) -- This aerial photo taken on March 23, 2023 shows the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station in Southern Province, Zambia. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema officially commissioned a Chinese-built hydropower plant, following the switching on of the plant's fifth generator on Friday. The five generators at the Kafue Gorge Lower Hydropower Station, constructed by the Chinese firm Sinohydro Corporation Limited, added a total of 750 megawatts to the country's national grid. Zambia’s energy crisis, exacerbated by prolonged drought conditions, is witnessing a glimmer of hope, with the government announcing that retail customers will soon benefit from three hours of stable electricity supply daily. This assurance came from Energy Minister Makozo Chikote during a press briefing on Wednesday, where he outlined the steps being taken to address the nation’s critical power shortfalls.

Minister Chikote revealed that the Maamba Energy Power Plant has returned to full operational capacity, and power imports are gradually normalising. “We expect to see a more stable power supply going forward,” he stated, reflecting the government’s optimism in improving the situation for consumers who have endured significant disruptions in recent months.

This announcement marks a notable shift from the previous month, during which Zambian households faced unpredictable and often prolonged power cuts. The minister attributed this improvement to the resolution of technical issues that had previously hindered electricity imports from Namibia and the completion of essential maintenance work at the Maamba plant, which boasts a production capacity of 300 megawatts.

Currently, Zambia’s electricity generation stands at 1,087 megawatts, starkly contrasting with the national demand, which exceeds 2,400 megawatts. The reliance on hydropower—responsible for approximately 80 per cent of the nation’s electricity—has left the country vulnerable, particularly as water levels in key reservoirs continue to dwindle.

In a proactive move to bolster energy resilience, the Zambian government is actively promoting private investment in alternative energy sources, notably solar and wind technologies. “Diversifying our energy portfolio is crucial for reducing dependence on hydropower,” Chikote remarked, indicating a strategic shift towards a more sustainable energy future.

Victor Mapani, managing director of Zesco Limited, the state power utility, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the critical need for investment in diverse energy solutions to meet national demand.

As Zambia navigates this precarious energy landscape, the government’s latest initiatives signal a determined effort to mitigate the impact of ongoing droughts and secure a more reliable power supply for its citizens.
