Zimbabwean President Mnangagwa Pledges Development in Second Term

Emmerson Mnangagwa has been officially sworn in for his second five-year term as President of Zimbabwe in a ceremony attended by regional leaders and foreign dignitaries. Mnangagwa’s re-election comes after winning 52.6 percent of the vote in the recently held general elections. In his inaugural address, President Mnangagwa expressed gratitude for the support received and outlined his vision for the future of Zimbabwe.

President Mnangagwa began his address by emphasizing the unity of Zimbabweans, regardless of their backgrounds or affiliations. He stressed his commitment to serving all citizens, highlighting that he is “President of all Zimbabweans, regardless of tribe, religion, color, creed, or political persuasion.” This message of inclusivity sets the tone for his second term.

The President lauded the 2023 Harmonised General Elections, characterizing them as a testament to Zimbabwe’s maturity as a democracy. He thanked the people for their role in preserving national unity and peace during the election process, emphasizing that Zimbabwe has demonstrated its commitment to constitutional democracy.

Mnangagwa outlined his government’s commitment to economic growth and poverty alleviation. He underscored the importance of having a national currency backed by a vibrant productive sector and the need to rely on internal resources for sustainable development. His administration aims to maximize the benefits of mineral resources through increased beneficiation and value addition. The President also highlighted the success of Zimbabwe’s agriculture sector and plans to ensure continued growth and food security.

The President acknowledged the importance of modernizing Zimbabwe’s national infrastructure, utilities, and amenities. Transport connectivity within provinces and to neighboring countries is a priority, as well as the continued upgrade of roads and rail systems. Mnangagwa also emphasized the importance of water and sanitation, particularly for urban populations, and ongoing efforts to improve energy generation and distribution.

President Mnangagwa recognized the potential of Zimbabwe’s tourism sector and pledged support for its growth, especially in the post-COVID-19 era. He emphasized the role of SMEs, women, and youth in realizing the country’s Vision 2030, promising increased attention to their development.

Emmerson Mnangagwa’s second term as President of Zimbabwe begins with a vision of unity, economic growth, and infrastructure development. The President’s inauguration ceremony, attended by regional and international leaders, demonstrates the continued interest in Zimbabwe’s progress. As the nation moves forward, it remains to be seen how these ambitious plans will translate into tangible improvements in the lives of Zimbabweans

Local Business Player, Tendai Chikomba, CEO of Zimbabwean Manufacturing Conglomerate:

“We welcome President Mnangagwa’s commitment to economic growth and his emphasis on utilizing our own resources for development. His focus on modernizing infrastructure and supporting SMEs aligns with our interests. However, we hope to see concrete policies that facilitate ease of doing business, particularly for local industries. We need a stable environment to thrive.”

Foreign Investor, Sarah Walker, London-based Investment Analyst:

“President Mnangagwa’s inauguration speech is encouraging for foreign investors. His emphasis on a national currency, mineral resource utilization, and economic diversification signals opportunities for international investments. We will closely monitor policy implementation and the government’s ability to create a conducive investment climate.”

Zimbabwean Entrepreneur, Nomsa Moyo, Founder of Tech Startup:

“As a tech entrepreneur, I appreciate the President’s recognition of the importance of innovation and supporting youth-driven startups. However, we need more details on how the government plans to support the tech ecosystem. Access to capital and a supportive regulatory environment are critical.”

Foreign Business Representative, James Anderson, London-based Business Association Spokesperson:

“President Mnangagwa’s commitment to unity and the rule of law is reassuring for foreign businesses. We are interested in Zimbabwe’s economic potential, but we need transparency and legal protection. We look forward to seeing reforms that foster a stable business environment and protect investors’ rights.”

These comments from both local and foreign business players reflect a mix of optimism and cautious optimism regarding President Mnangagwa’s plans and priorities for Zimbabwe’s economic development. The emphasis on stability, transparency, and supportive policies will be crucial in attracting and retaining investments in the country.
