Yvonne Muza: Zimbabwean Voice Redefining Afrobeat and RnB on Global Stage

Yvonne Muza, otherwise known as Slimthick, is an emerging force in the African RnB, dance, soul, and Afrobeat scene. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, she took a bold leap two years ago, relocating to the UK to pursue her passion for music. With a deep-rooted connection to her African heritage and a relentless drive to carve out her own space in the industry, Slimthick is steadily gaining recognition as an artist to watch.

Her journey has been anything but easy. Moving from Zimbabwe to the UK presented both personal and professional challenges, from adjusting to a new culture to establishing herself in an unfamiliar music landscape. “Standing out as an artist takes a lot of effort” she admits. “It took time to find my voice and build connections within the UK music industry, but these experiences have been shaping me as an artist.”

Slimthick’s music is a seamless blend of genres that carry profound cultural significance. She fuses the emotional depth of RnB and soul with the energy and rhythm of Afrobeat, creating a sound that is both unique and deeply resonant. “I don’t overthink it.” she says. “It’s more about feeling the music, drawing from different cultures, and putting my own spin on it.”

Her breakthrough came with Wakanditadzira, a collaboration with Zimbabwean artist Qounfuzed. The song, an emotive Afrobeat-infused track, introduced audiences to her distinct vocal style and storytelling ability. “Collaborating with Qounfuzed was an amazing experience. The creative process was very organic. We both shared ideas, played around with melodies, and just vibed off each other’s energy.” she recalls.

“The response was overwhelming. That track really helped me connect with a wider audience, and seeing it take off the way it did reminded me of the power of music in uniting people.”

She solidified her presence in the Afrobeat scene with Vhurika, a high-energy collaboration with UK-based artist MAJJESTY.

“The song is about letting go, feeling free, and celebrating life, something that resonates with both the African spirit and the vibe of Afrobeat music.” she explains. “I wanted to capture that joy, confidence, and energy, and I feel like we really achieved that.”

In an era where social media is a crucial tool for artists, Slimthick has cultivated a growing fanbase through her engaging online presence. However, she acknowledges the challenges of balancing authenticity with the pressures of public visibility.

“There’s a lot of pressure to always appear perfect. I try to remind myself that it’s okay to be vulnerable, and I’m not just an artist, I’m a person with a journey, too.”

For many African artists, breaking into the international music industry is an uphill battle, but Slimthick remains steadfast in her approach. “One of the biggest lessons I have learned is the importance of patience and persistence. The industry is tough, but consistency and staying true to your sound will always pay off.” she says.
Her advice to aspiring artists is clear:

“Never compromise on authenticity. People connect with music that feels real. Build your audience authentically, use global platforms, and most importantly, take risks.”

Her music is deeply personal, often reflecting her own experiences, emotions, and cultural heritage. Yvonne says there is a  lot of personal reflection in her lyrics, mostly about love, overcoming struggles and appreciating the beauty of African culture. She embodies the essence of an artist on the rise, her music is a seamless fusion of passion, culture, and resilience, reflecting both her roots and her evolution. There is an unmistakable depth to her sound, where the smooth sensuality of RnB meets the pulsating energy of Afrobeat, creating a sonic identity that feels both familiar and refreshingly new.
Beyond her music, her demeanour is striking confident yet unpretentious, with a quiet determination that speaks volumes about her journey. For someone still in the early stages of her career, she carries herself with the poise of an artist who understands the weight of her ambition. Her move from Zimbabwe to the UK was not merely a shift in geography but a statement of intent, a testament to her willingness to take risks and forge her own path in an industry that offers no guarantees. Slimthick is not just an emerging artist; she is a storyteller, a force, and a name that is steadily carving its place in the global music landscape.

Looking ahead, Slimthick is brimming with excitement for the future. She revealed that she has a lot more music in the pipeline on which she features a few of her favourite musicians. She is also exploring new sounds and bringing a more personal side into the music.
“There are a few surprises in store, but I can’t say too much yet” she says.

With her unwavering passion, undeniable talent, and ability to blend genres effortlessly, Slimthick is well on her way to making a lasting mark on the global music scene. As she continues to evolve, one thing is certain, her journey has only just begun.
