Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems A/S has completed the installation of turbines across Anthem’s 420MW Northern Cluster wind project in South Africa’s Karoo region, adding further momentum to the country’s expanding renewable energy sector.
The final turbine was installed at the 140MW Ishwati Emoyeni wind farm, completing the construction phase of turbine installation across the three project sites that make up the Northern Cluster. The development also includes the 140MW Umsinde and 140MW Khangela wind farms.
Vestas installed a total of 96 V163 turbines across the three facilities, with each wind farm consisting of 32 turbines with an individual capacity of 4.5MW. Commercial operations across the cluster are expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to the completion of remaining project activities and regulatory requirements.
The Northern Cluster forms part of South Africa’s broader efforts to diversify its electricity generation mix through increased investment in renewable energy. The country has been seeking to address long standing electricity supply challenges while reducing dependence on traditional power sources through a combination of renewable energy, grid investment and private sector participation.
Vestas has stated that it has more than 2GW of wind energy capacity either installed or under construction in South Africa, reflecting the growing role of wind power within the country’s energy landscape.
The project developer, Anthem, was established in 2025 following the integration of African Clean Energy Developments and Energy Infrastructure Management Services Africa. The independent power producer is backed by African Infrastructure Investment Managers and the IDEAS Fund, which is managed by AIIM.
Anthem develops, finances, constructs, owns and operates renewable energy projects across Southern Africa. The company has reported an operational and development portfolio exceeding 2GW, alongside a greenfield pipeline of more than 11GW.
The Karoo region, traditionally associated with agriculture and vast semi arid landscapes, has increasingly become a focal point for renewable energy investment due to its strong wind resources and available land. Projects such as the Northern Cluster illustrate the evolving relationship between infrastructure development, energy security and regional economic participation.
As South Africa continues its energy transition, renewable projects are expected to remain an important component of efforts to expand electricity generation capacity, attract investment and support broader industrial development. However, the long term impact of such developments will also depend on factors including grid capacity, local economic participation and ensuring that communities hosting renewable infrastructure benefit from the transformation of the energy sector.
The Northern Cluster represents one of several renewable energy developments contributing to Africa’s wider energy transition, where countries are balancing the need for increased electricity access, economic growth and sustainable development within their own national contexts.
