Unveiling the Extraordinary Journey of Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng: Scholar, Leader, Changemaker

In the realm of academia, where brilliance meets a fervent social conscience, Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng shines as a luminary figure. With a distinguished career spanning education, leadership, and philanthropy, Prof. Phakeng has left an indelible mark on the global stage. Over a decade of journalistic experience allows us to delve into her remarkable journey, replete with milestones that have reshaped the landscape of mathematics education and higher learning.

Hailing from South Africa, Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng boasts a rich tapestry of accomplishments. As a B1 NRF-rated Scientist, her international recognition echoes far beyond her homeland. Notably, she served as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town for an impressive 4 years and 7 months, ushering the institution into unprecedented heights.

Prof. Phakeng’s ascendancy at the University of Cape Town began in July 2018, building upon her prior role as DVC for Research and Internationalisation. Her illustrious journey, however, was set in motion much earlier. Previously, she served as the Vice Principal for Research and Innovation at the University of South Africa for 5 years, following her dynamic tenure of 3 years as Dean of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology at the same institution.

A Scholarly Trailblazer: Educationally, Prof. Phakeng’s achievements stand as a testament to her intellectual prowess. Holding a PhD in Mathematics Education and an MSc in the same field from the University of the Witwatersrand, she also earned a BSc in Pure Mathematics from the University of North-West (formerly University of Bophuthatswana). Her comprehensive academic background fuels her commitment to enhancing mathematical literacy across communities.

Global Keynote Speaker and Visionary: Beyond her academic achievements, Prof. Phakeng’s influence extends to international podiums. She has been invited to deliver over 60 keynote addresses at prominent global conferences and as a visiting professor at prestigious universities worldwide. Her eloquence and insight have consistently left an indelible imprint on diverse audiences.

A Catalyst for Excellence: Prof. Phakeng’s stewardship at the University of Cape Town precipitated remarkable results in global university rankings. Since 2019, a historical milestone emerged as UCT claimed the top spot in Africa across five major world university rankings. These encompass the QS World University Rankings, Times Higher Education World University Rankings, US News Best Global Universities Rankings, Academic Ranking of World Universities (Shanghai Ranking), and CWTS Leiden Ranking.

A Philanthropic Visionary: The moniker “Deputy Mother” aptly captures Prof. Phakeng’s commitment to nurturing the future. A philanthropist with profound social consciousness, she founded the Adopt-a-learner Foundation in 2004. This visionary initiative offers financial and educational support to South African students hailing from townships and rural areas, enabling them to pursue higher education aspirations.

Inspirational Wisdom: Prof. Phakeng’s wisdom resonates in her life philosophy, encapsulated in her words: “Don’t wish it was easier, wish you were better. Don’t wish for fewer problems, wish for more skills. Don’t wish for fewer challenges, wish for more wisdom.” Her enduring message speaks to resilience, self-improvement, and the power of navigating challenges with unwavering determination.

In a world where academia and societal transformation intersect, Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng stands as an exemplar. Her academic excellence, leadership acumen, and profound impact via philanthropy have sculpted a legacy that reverberates across borders. As an expert journalist with a decade of experience, we celebrate the trailblazing journey of this exceptional mathematician and visionary leader.
