Zambia’s Union54, a prominent provider of innovative digital financial solutions, has teamed up with Mastercard to introduce ChitChat, a social commerce platform aimed at revolutionizing trade in Africa. Union54, an alumni of Y Combinator, has been at the forefront of developing cutting-edge tools to propel African commerce forward. With its extensive network of fintech partners across the continent, the startup has successfully issued millions of debit cards to consumers from nearly every African country.
ChitChat, powered by Union54’s expertise and Mastercard’s industry-leading technology, allows users from across Africa to engage in secure, encrypted conversations while also facilitating seamless financial transactions. The platform enables users to send money to one another, access a USD debit card, and make purchases from digital storefronts, all within the app’s ecosystem. Initially, ChitChat’s card and payments features will be introduced in a beta version available in Angola, Tanzania, and Ghana, with plans to expand into additional markets later this year.
Mastercard’s deepening integration into ChitChat’s payment infrastructure and USD debit card features underscores its commitment to enabling the issuance of cards in African markets. Union54 has previously collaborated with Mastercard to issue over two million cards, making the partnership a testament to their shared vision of transforming the financial landscape in Africa.
Perseus Mlambo, CEO of Union54, expressed his excitement about the launch of ChitChat and the extended partnership with Mastercard. Mlambo believes that mobile payments and chat platforms have the potential to significantly boost trade across Africa, and ChitChat aims to be the catalyst for this growth. By seamlessly combining payment functionality within a chat platform, ChitChat empowers users by providing them with a USD card instantly and on their terms.
The introduction of ChitChat is set to unlock new opportunities for African consumers, entrepreneurs, and businesses alike. As Union54 and Mastercard forge ahead with their shared mission, the stage is set for the acceleration of digital commerce and financial inclusion throughout the continent.
