In a devastating turn of events, reports from domestic authorities reveal that more than 90 individuals lost their lives when a ferry sank off the north coast of Mozambique.
The British Broadcasting Corp (BBC) relayed that the incident unfolded as passengers sought to escape a cholera outbreak, as confirmed by Jaime Neto, secretary of state for the province of Nampula. Neto emphasized that the boat’s overcrowded and unsuitable conditions exacerbated the situation, with numerous children among the casualties.
Heart-wrenching videos circulated on social media, depicting bodies strewn across the beach and individuals grappling with the loss of children. Despite these visuals, The Southern African Times could not independently verify the authenticity of the footage.
Meanwhile, investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the disaster, as reported by The Guardian, citing AFP sources. Out of nearly 130 passengers aboard the ill-fated vessel, only five were rescued, with two currently receiving medical attention.
The ferry had been en route from Lunga in the province to Mozambique island, off the coast of Nampula, as detailed by reports. Despite repeated requests for comment, government officials have yet to respond to inquiries, leaving many questions unanswered amidst the grief and mourning that has engulfed the region in the wake of this tragic event.
