The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) announced on Wednesday that it will transport 160,000 tonnes of maize from Tanzania to Zambia. According to a statement from its headquarters in Dar es Salaam, the maize will be shipped from Makambako and Vwawa in Tanzania to Kalomo in Zambia.
Bruno Ching’andu, the managing director of TAZARA, confirmed that the authority will facilitate the efficient transportation of the maize, aiming to move at least 20,000 tonnes per month over the next eight months. This initiative is part of the Zambian government’s efforts to address food security concerns exacerbated by a recent drought in southern Africa.
Ching’andu emphasised TAZARA’s commitment to supporting the Zambian government in ensuring a stable maize supply. “We are dedicated to assisting in the efficient delivery of essential goods during this critical period,” he stated.
The operation is linked to Zambia’s procurement of 650,000 tonnes of maize purchased from Tanzania in June 2024. The TAZARA railway, which spans 1,860 kilometres, connects the port of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania with New Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia’s Central Province. Built between 1970 and 1975 with an interest-free loan from China, the railway, known as the “Uhuru Railway” or “Independent Railway,” began commercial operations in July 1976.
This effort highlights the important role of railway partnerships in overcoming logistical challenges and ensuring the timely delivery of vital resources.
