Barcelona recently hosted the second edition of the Africa-Spain Business Summit, an event marking significant progress in the relationship between European and African nations. Abdou Souleye Diop, the managing partner of Forvis Mazars, played a pivotal role in this summit, offering valuable insights into the evolving geopolitical landscape and its impact on business relations.
Diop noted that the initial summit last year served to lay the groundwork for discussions on improving economic ties between Europe and Africa. He highlighted the increased confidence among African countries in their economies, citing a reduction in debt crises and a rise in investments. The geopolitical tensions stemming from the Ukraine-Russia conflict and the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic have also influenced these dynamics.
The relationship between Spain and Morocco emerged as a key topic during the summit. Diop emphasized that the proximity of the two nations—separated by just 14 kilometres—makes them vital partners in fostering trade between Europe and Africa. He pointed out that Morocco is Spain’s leading partner in terms of exports and imports within Africa, with 45% of Spain’s African exports destined for Morocco.
Recent visits by Spanish government officials to Morocco and vice versa have signalled a rekindling of this relationship. These visits have facilitated discussions not just about bilateral investments but also about using Morocco as a gateway for Spanish companies to enter the broader African market. Similarly, Moroccan and African companies view Spain as a strategic entry point into Europe.
Diop discussed several key sectors where Spain’s expertise could benefit Africa, particularly in solar energy, renewables, and infrastructure. He stressed that while the perception of risk in Africa remains high among European investors, the reality is often more stable, thanks to robust legal frameworks and continuity in business operations despite political changes.
A significant part of the discussion at the summit revolved around changing the narrative about Africa. Diop called for a more balanced portrayal of the continent, emphasizing the progress and opportunities rather than focusing solely on its challenges. He praised media outlets like Atalayar for providing a more accurate and comprehensive picture of Africa, which can help in reshaping investor perceptions.
The Africa-Spain Business Summit underscored the importance of Spain and Morocco’s strategic relationship in bridging Europe and Africa. By fostering stronger economic ties and changing the narrative around Africa, the summit highlighted the potential for mutual growth and prosperity. The collaborative efforts between these regions serve as a model for future partnerships, showcasing how diplomatic, political, and economic relationships can drive meaningful change and development across continents.
