South African Airways (SAA) has announced an increase in flights between Johannesburg and Perth, effective from February 2, 2025. The national carrier will raise the frequency of its service on this route to four flights per week, a significant boost from the current thrice-weekly schedule.
This expansion is seen as a direct response to the growing demand for travel between South Africa and Australia, a trend driven by the substantial South African expatriate community residing in Australia and a rising volume of business and leisure travellers. The new schedule aims to enhance connectivity and support the airline’s long-term strategy of rebuilding its international network.
The revised schedule will maintain the airline’s consistent departure timings. Flights are set to leave Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, ensuring an even distribution across the week. Similarly, return flights from Perth will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, providing convenient travel options for passengers on both ends.
This development marks a steady return to form for South African Airways, which resumed flights to Perth in November 2022 following a period of suspension due to financial restructuring and the global pandemic. The airline’s ongoing recovery efforts have included a phased expansion of its route network, supported by improved passenger loads and operational stability.
The Johannesburg-Perth route has long been a critical link for business exchanges, family reunions, and cultural ties. The route also offers connections to regional destinations in Africa, broadening its appeal to a diverse passenger base. The increased frequency is expected to further bolster SAA’s competitive positioning in the international aviation market.
Tickets for the additional flights are already on sale, allowing customers to plan their travel well in advance. As the airline navigates its growth trajectory, the enhanced service is anticipated to contribute positively to SAA’s financial health and reputation for reliable, efficient operations.
