South Africa has denounced Israel’s ongoing military actions in Lebanon, including the recent bombardment of Beirut’s city centre, as a flagrant violation of both the country’s sovereignty and international humanitarian law. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) issued a strongly worded statement on Monday, criticising the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) for targeting a densely populated residential neighbourhood in the Lebanese capital, an area that had previously been untouched during the current escalation. The airstrikes, which occurred on Thursday, claimed the lives of at least 22 civilians and left over 117 injured.
This assault represents the deadliest attack on central Beirut since the war with Lebanon resumed, prompting growing alarm within the international community. South Africa’s government has expressed particular concern over the potential for wider regional destabilisation, warning of the escalating humanitarian crisis and the risk of an uncontrollable military conflagration in the Middle East.
Israel’s military operations in Lebanon began with ground incursions into the country’s southern region on 30th September, where a UN peacekeeping force of approximately 10,400 personnel is stationed under the command of a Spanish general. Despite the deployment of international forces, the IDF has reportedly continued its breach of the Blue Line—the de facto border between Lebanon and Israel, established by the United Nations. Official Lebanese figures report that nearly 2,000 people have been killed in Lebanon since the onset of Israel’s strikes, with more than half of those casualties occurring in the southern and eastern parts of the country, as well as in Hezbollah-controlled areas of southern Beirut.
South Africa’s condemnation extended beyond the immediate airstrikes on Lebanon to include Israel’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza, accusing the Israeli government of operating with impunity and without regard for international legal norms. DIRCO highlighted that Israel’s actions, including the deliberate targeting of peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, constitute grave breaches of international humanitarian law. A senior UN official has echoed this sentiment, informing the UN Security Council that the safety of peacekeeping forces in the region is increasingly at risk, as Israeli forces have allegedly fired upon UN positions with impunity.
DIRCO’s statement calls for an urgent cessation of hostilities and demands that the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, respond with a consistent and resolute defence of international law. South Africa warned that the longer the conflict continues, the greater the danger it poses to global peace and security, urging immediate intervention to prevent further bloodshed and chaos.
