Slouthern African Development Community (SADC) Chairperson and Zimbabwean President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, has acknowledged the Constitutional Council of Mozambique’s ruling that confirmed Daniel Chapo as the winner of the 9 October general elections.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Mnangagwa described the court’s decision as a critical step in affirming the outcome of Mozambique’s electoral process. He noted that the ruling complied with national legal frameworks and SADC’s Electoral Guidelines.
Mnangagwa encouraged all political actors to respect the Constitutional Council’s verdict, stating it reinforces the rule of law and democratic governance in Mozambique. He added that the decision should help establish peace, stability, and normalcy within the country.
The SADC leader emphasised the bloc’s readiness to support Mozambique’s incoming government in strengthening electoral democracy and fostering regional cooperation. He also called on the international community to respect Mozambique’s sovereignty and to engage constructively to support the country’s governance and peacebuilding efforts.
The Constitutional Council’s decision, announced on Monday, validated the electoral victory of Daniel Chapo, a candidate of the Frelimo party. The October elections had drawn close regional attention, with SADC playing a supervisory role in observing the process to ensure adherence to democratic principles.
