Namibia has officially welcomed the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), addressing the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices in the occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem. The ICJ’s decision, delivered on July 19, confirmed that Israel’s occupation and related policies are illegal and discriminatory, violating the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

In a statement released on Monday, Namibia’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Peya Mushelenga, expressed strong support for the court’s findings, noting that they align with Namibia’s long-standing arguments against apartheid and racial discrimination. “The ICJ’s thorough examination of the facts and the law reaffirms our stance. We commend the court for its diligent work and urge the international community to support the rights of the Palestinian people and work towards lasting peace in the region,” said Mushelenga.

The ICJ found that Israel’s settlements and annexations in the West Bank and East Jerusalem violate international law, constituting apartheid and racial segregation, and undermining the Palestinian right to self-determination. This opinion marks a significant legal affirmation of the Palestinian cause, calling into question the legality of longstanding Israeli policies in the occupied territories.

Mushelenga emphasized that Namibia’s involvement in this case is deeply influenced by its own history of racial discrimination and apartheid. He noted, “Namibia’s past experiences with apartheid provide us with a unique perspective and a moral imperative to oppose similar injustices anywhere in the world. Our support for the Palestinian cause is not only a matter of international solidarity but also a reflection of our commitment to human rights and justice.”

The Namibian minister called on the international community to take the ICJ’s advisory opinion seriously and to ensure its recommendations are acted upon. He urged the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council to follow through with this seminal advisory opinion and enforce compliance in a manner that fully respects international law and the decisions of international judicial bodies.

The ICJ’s findings have sparked a wave of reactions globally, with various governments and international organizations weighing in on the implications of the court’s decision. For Namibia, the ICJ’s opinion reinforces its advocacy for the Palestinian people and its broader commitment to human rights and international justice.

As the world watches the unfolding developments, Namibia’s steadfast support for the ICJ’s advisory opinion highlights the importance of upholding international law and protecting the rights of all peoples. “We stand with the Palestinian people in their struggle for self-determination and justice. It is our hope that this advisory opinion will galvanize the international community to take concrete steps towards a just and lasting peace in the Middle East,” Mushelenga concluded.

The ICJ’s advisory opinion, while not legally binding, carries significant moral and legal weight, and it is now up to the international community to translate this into meaningful action.
