Mukuru Strengthens Remittance Access in South Africa Through Partnership with Travelex

Yemurai Chatapura, Commercial Manager for Remittances at Mukuru

Mukuru, a leading financial services platform with operations in over 50 countries, has entered a strategic partnership with Travelex, a prominent provider of foreign exchange services, to expand cash payout options for remittance recipients across South Africa. The collaboration introduces Travelex as an additional payout channel within the Mukuru network, enabling customers to access funds at any of Travelex’s 46 branches nationwide, located in high-traffic and accessible areas.

This partnership seeks to enhance efficiency and accessibility for millions of South Africans who rely on remittances for daily necessities. By broadening the payout network, the initiative reduces travel time and associated costs while providing customers with secure and reliable access to cash. The expansion also strengthens Mukuru’s resilience by diversifying its distribution channels, mitigating the risk of dependence on a single payout method.

South Africa’s Bureau de Change sector provides a robust regulatory framework that underpins this collaboration. Operators such as Travelex maintain liquidity standards and adhere to stringent compliance protocols, ensuring that transactions are conducted in accordance with national financial regulations. On-site know-your-customer procedures further safeguard clients and reinforce trust in the network.

Yemurai Chatapura, Commercial Manager for Remittances at Mukuru, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to inclusive financial services. She stated that the partnership enhances Mukuru’s ability to deliver secure and convenient financial solutions while upholding rigorous service standards. Marlize Van Der Schyff, Financial Director at Travelex, noted that the alliance represents a complementary alignment of organisational strengths, with the shared objective of providing a seamless customer experience.

The collaboration is part of a broader vision to facilitate affordable financial services for African communities that are often underserved by traditional banking infrastructure. By increasing access to remittance payouts in trusted locations, the partnership contributes to economic participation and supports the livelihoods of those dependent on cross-border financial flows. Mukuru’s growing footprint and operational experience across Africa position it to advance this mission, reflecting a human-centred approach that recognises the social and economic realities of African communities.
