Mozambican President Calls for Strengthened Ties with Zambia

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi has called for the continued consolidation of ties with Zambia to achieve the prosperity desired for future generations. Addressing the National Assembly of Zambia on Friday, during a two-day state visit that commenced on Thursday, President Nyusi emphasised the importance of cultivating reconciliation, tolerance, and constructive debate through assemblies or parliaments and other platforms for democratic dialogue at different levels.

“We are here to reaffirm that Mozambique and Mozambicans will always continue to stand by Zambia and the brotherly people of Zambia on this journey and, now, for the economic development of our countries, jointly harnessing the comparative advantages in the areas of mining, agriculture, transport and logistics, shared water courses, environment, trade, among other areas,” President Nyusi stated.

He expressed gratitude to Zambia for its friendship and solidarity, particularly in the pursuit of freedom and peace in the southern African region, with a special mention of Mozambique.

President Nyusi highlighted the vitality of the historical and cultural ties binding the two nations, noting that both countries share several common issues, including a decentralisation programme aimed at reducing regional imbalances by maximising local potential.

In his address, President Nyusi commended the Zambian people for their commitment to building a rule of law based on democratic and just principles, praising Zambia as a beacon of thriving democracy in the southern African region.

During his visit, President Nyusi engaged in discussions with his Zambian counterpart, President Hakainde Hichilema. The two leaders agreed to invest in joint ventures within the energy sector, including the development of a gas pipeline from Mozambique to Zambia. Additionally, President Nyusi pledged Mozambique’s readiness to supply fuel to Zambia, thereby aiding in addressing the country’s current electricity deficit through increased power exports.

The Mozambican president’s visit underscores the robust historical and cultural connections between the two nations and signifies a commitment to strengthening their partnership for mutual economic development and regional stability.
