Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth conceded defeat for his Lepep Alliance in the country’s legislative elections on Monday, ahead of the official results expected later in the day.
In a statement made shortly before 2 p.m. local time, Jugnauth acknowledged the impending victory of the opposition Change Alliance, led by former prime minister Navin Ramgoolam. “It is evident that the Lepep Alliance faces a substantial defeat,” he informed reporters. “I have done my utmost for our country and its people. However, the electorate has chosen a different team to steer our nation forward, and I respect that choice. I wish my country and its people the best for the future.”
While the full results remain forthcoming, early returns from five constituencies suggest that Change Alliance candidates hold a commanding lead, positioning them well to secure a majority in the 70-seat National Assembly. According to observers, the trend appears consistent across all 21 constituencies, suggesting a sweeping victory for Ramgoolam’s coalition.
In Mauritius’ unicameral parliamentary system, 62 members of the National Assembly are elected by direct vote, while the remaining eight are appointed. Once the official results are confirmed, the leader of the majority alliance will be designated as prime minister.
