In a significant step for Africa’s e-mobility sector, Kempower has entered into a strategic partnership with Paterson Simons to deliver advanced direct current (DC) fast-charging solutions to West and Central Africa. This collaboration marks Kempower’s first official sales and service representation on the continent.
The initial outcome of this alliance is the supply and installation of a Kempower DC charging system at Meridian Port Services (MPS) in Tema, Ghana. The system, implemented by Paterson Simons, is designed to power the port’s heavy-duty electric equipment. It comprises six 300 kW CCS2 Kempower Double Satellites, engineered to withstand challenging environmental conditions. The installation integrates advanced cooling and remote operation capabilities, enabling efficient, safe, and scalable electrification, while offering a pathway to reduced long-term operational costs.
The move reflects a broader, albeit gradual, shift towards electrification across African industries. While the continent’s e-mobility transition lags behind that of Europe and Asia, it is gaining momentum in response to rising fuel prices, global climate change commitments, and the need for resilient energy infrastructure. In regions such as West and Central Africa, where power distribution networks can present operational challenges, modular and adaptive charging solutions like those offered by Kempower are particularly well-suited.
Paterson Simons, an established supplier of heavy lifting equipment and technical services across Africa, will serve as Kempower’s authorised sales and aftermarket partner in the region. The partnership combines Kempower’s engineering capabilities with Paterson Simons’ extensive local presence and technical expertise, creating a comprehensive support system for industries such as ports, mining, and logistics seeking to transition to electric-powered equipment.
According to Paterson Simons, the collaboration will enable faster access to high-quality charging technology, tailored to African operating conditions, alongside on-site technical assistance, spare parts supply, and operator training. Paterson Simons’ technical team has undergone certification through the Kempower Academy in Finland, ensuring that they are equipped to manage installation, maintenance, and after-sales support.
James Savoy, Group Technical Director at Paterson Simons, stated that the company’s role extends beyond supplying equipment, emphasising their commitment to guiding clients through the adoption of new technologies. Carlo Cecchi, Director of New Markets at Kempower, highlighted that the partnership strengthens Kempower’s engagement in the heavy-duty segment and underlines its ambition to expand into markets with a demonstrable need for advanced charging solutions.
This development signals a noteworthy step in Africa’s journey towards cleaner, more efficient industrial operations, underscoring the role of strategic partnerships in bridging technology gaps and fostering sustainable infrastructure growth.
