Joeboy has long been a true embodiment of artistic expression, an artist whose early work resonated deeply with audiences and cemented his status as one of Africa’s finest musical talents.
The Lagos-born superstar’s latest album, Viva Lavida—meaning “Live Life”—encapsulates his philosophy of embracing freedom, self-awareness, and inner peace amidst life’s unpredictability. “At the end of the day, life is unpredictable, and bad times are inevitable, but the one thing you can control is how you react and live. I choose to live free. No matter how many times I get my heart broken, no matter whether I succeed or fail in life and love—Viva Lavida,” Joeboy tells The Southern African Times.
The album opens with Innocent, an introspective track that reintroduces Joeboy’s signature Loverboy persona. It is followed by the upbeat Abena, a feel-good anthem designed to get listeners on their feet. Streets Are Lonely weaves hypnotic harmonies with Joeboy’s velvety vocals, while the previously released Taxi Driver—accompanied by its viral music video series—showcases rhythmic percussion and narrates the fleeting connections of life in Lagos.
Speaking about the album, Joeboy explains that it is structured around three key themes: vulnerability, introspection, and vibrancy. Songs such as SMH and Taxi Driver explore the rawness of human emotion, while Sinner delves into deeper self-reflection through evocative lyrics and billowing basslines. Meanwhile, the album’s more energetic moments celebrate the joy of living freely. “The whole idea of the album is about living free, and that can mean different things depending on your perspective,” he says. “For me, living free means expressing myself fully in my music.”
The album boasts a strong lineup of collaborations, featuring artists Joeboy describes as “personal connections” rather than mere industry acquaintances. Among them is Nigerian rap icon Olamide, whose appearance on Free of Charge serves as the album’s focal track. Joeboy reunites with producer Tempoe—renowned for the hit Sip (Alcohol)—on SMH, a track brimming with introspective lyricism. The romantic Magdalene sees him crooning, “Have you ever seen anything more beautiful in your life?” while Brazilian artist Elana Dara lends her ethereal vocals to the dreamy Sunset. Previous hit Adenuga, featuring Qing Madi, blends airy R&B vocals with light, hypnotic instrumentals. Reflecting on these collaborations, Joeboy says, “I’m at a stage in my career where I choose to work with people whose sound I truly enjoy and with whom I share a genuine connection. Olamide has been incredibly supportive of my journey, and Tempoe is like a brother to me.”
Viva Lavida arrives alongside a visually stunning music video for its lead single, Free of Charge. Set against four distinct landscapes bursting with rich colours and dynamic energy, the video immerses viewers in a multi-layered universe of opulence. Joeboy stuns in a crimson-red suit, while Olamide exudes luxury in an all-black ensemble. The visuals, shifting from neon-lit cityscapes to sun-drenched deserts, amplify the song’s theme of indulgence and devotion. “I’m a big fan of nature—I love trees and animals. Cape Town was where I filmed the video for my breakthrough single, so I wanted to relive that moment,” Joeboy shares.
With Viva Lavida, Joeboy is embracing a carefree, fun-loving approach, letting fate take the wheel while he simply presses the accelerator.
