Irv Gotti, the visionary producer and founder of Murder Inc. Records, has passed away at the age of 54. Over the past few years, he had faced numerous health challenges, including a stroke, with reports suggesting he had been placed on life support. However, the official cause of death has not been disclosed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Born Irving Domingo Lorenzo Jr. in Queens, New York, Gotti rose to prominence as a formidable force in hip-hop. Beginning his career under the name DJ Irv, he played a crucial role in shaping the genre’s landscape. His early production work on Mic Geronimo’s debut album The Natural introduced the world to rising talents such as JAY-Z, DMX, and Ja Rule. One of his most notable early credits was Can I Live, a standout track from JAY-Z’s seminal 1996 debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
Gotti’s influence extended beyond the studio. As an A&R executive at Def Jam, he was instrumental in signing DMX, paving the way for the rapper’s meteoric rise. He served as the executive producer of DMX’s debut album, It’s Dark and Hell is Hot, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold over four million copies in the United States.
Leveraging his success, Gotti secured a distribution deal with Def Jam to establish Murder Inc. Records. Under his leadership, the label became a dominant force in the late 1990s and early 2000s, launching the careers of Ja Rule and Ashanti. He masterminded anthems such as Holla Holla, Between Me and You, Put It On Me, Livin’ It Up, and Mesmerize. With Ashanti, he produced the chart-topping hit Foolish, alongside Happy and Baby, solidifying her status as a star.
Beyond Murder Inc., Gotti’s production credits spanned collaborations with JAY-Z, Jennifer Lopez, Fat Joe, Memphis Bleek, and Eve, reinforcing his legacy as one of hip-hop’s most influential architects. His business acumen and creative vision positioned him as one of the most respected executives of his era, setting a precedent for aspiring music moguls.
His impact extended into television, where he created and produced BET’s acclaimed anthology series Tales, which brought classic hip-hop songs to life on screen. In 2022, he executive-produced The Murder Inc. Story, a docuseries chronicling his decades-long journey in the music industry.
