Gutu Tich: Redefining African Urban Fashion with a Contemporary Approach

Gutu Tich, a rising contemporary urban African clothing brand, has been making waves across the continent and the world at large. Founded by the Tichavangana brothers, Simbarashe and Munyaradzi, Gutu Tich has become synonymous with a fresh, vibrant, and contemporary approach to fashion, redefining the African urban fashion scene and gaining a diverse global following.

The birth of Gutu Tich took place during the World Cup in Southeast England, where the brothers noticed the lack of representation of African fashion amidst a crowd of animated fans clad in big European and American brands. Inspired by their motto, “to know where you are going, you must first know where you came from,” the brothers combined “Gutu,” representing their roots in Zimbabwe, with “Tichivangana,” meaning togetherness, to create Gutu Tich.

The Brothers Behind the Brand:

The brand is a brainchild of two brothers, each contributing their expertise. Simbarashe, with a degree in business management, oversees operations, distribution, and marketing, while Munyaradzi, an architecture graduate, leads the creative arm of the brand. Their distinct characteristics shine through in Gutu Tich’s designs and presentation.

Journey to Success:

Launching a contemporary fashion brand from the UK and gaining recognition in Africa was no easy feat. Gutu Tich broke the stereotype of African-inspired fashion by embracing a more innovative, contemporary approach. Their marketing campaigns, like “Inspired by you, created by us” and “African is Not for Sissies (ANFS),” garnered widespread acclaim. Customers from Africa and beyond eagerly ordered the brand’s products, making Gutu Tich a global sensation.

Celebrity Endorsements:

Gutu Tich has attracted numerous celebrities and public figures, both locally and internationally, due to its international appeal. Personalities like Major League DJs, Juls, SMADE, K Chinga, Kim Jade, Holy Ten, Tammy Moyo, Mapara Jazz, ExQ, Mr Brown, and Takura have embraced the brand, further fueling its popularity.

Future Endeavors:

In 2023, Gutu Tich expanded its offerings with a new corporate division catering to institutions, sports teams, and companies seeking personalized merchandise. Plans are underway to open a flagship store in Southern Africa, solidifying the brand’s presence. The founders promise a surprising announcement that will elevate Gutu Tich as the go-to Premium African-inspired clothing brand.

Collaboration with New Era:

Gutu Tich seized the opportunity to collaborate with New Era, a prominent American headwear producer known for iconic designs like the NY Yankees and the Chicago Bulls caps. This partnership led to the creation of the “I AM AFRICA” collection, a timeless fashion accessory embodying the African continent. The collection’s theme draws inspiration from an African proverb, motivating the continent to assert its position as a global powerhouse.

The Journey’s Impact:

The journey has taught the Tichavangana brothers resilience, determination, and the importance of staying true to their vision. Initially met with skepticism, they persisted and struck a balance between quality and affordability, fostering a loyal customer base. Gutu Tich’s cultural stories and heritage appeal to generations, spreading a sense of belonging and representation across Africa.

Expanding Horizons:

With their Africa operations growing, Gutu Tich plans to operate in three African countries soon, servicing most of Sub-Saharan Africa. In the UK, they aim to integrate with third-party retailers, expanding their customer reach and accessibility.

The Key to Success:

To launch and sustain a contemporary urban African clothing brand, Gutu Tich emphasizes the importance of originality, unwavering faith, and the courage to face rejection. Credibility, character, and consistency are the cornerstones of their success.

Their marketing campaigns, like “Inspired by you, created by us” and “African is Not for Sissies (ANFS),” garnered widespread acclaim. Customers from Africa and beyond eagerly ordered the brand’s products, making Gutu Tich a global sensation.

Gutu Tich’s journey from its inception during the World Cup to becoming a global phenomenon has been a testament to the Tichavangana brothers’ vision, innovation, and commitment. Through their contemporary African-inspired fashion, Gutu Tich has made a lasting impact, empowering Africans worldwide to embrace their heritage with pride and style. As the brand continues to grow and expand its horizons, its influence on the fashion industry and beyond is set to soar to even greater heights.
