First Quantum Minerals Ltd., a Canadian multinational mining company, has announced the commencement of commercial production at its nickel mining project in northwestern Zambia. The company reported a significant increase in nickel output, producing 6,147 metric tonnes in the second quarter of 2024, compared to 4,031 metric tonnes in the first quarter.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the company highlighted the consistent positive results achieved in the first half of the year, which aligned with their expectations and justified the move to declare commercial production. Mining volumes have shown steady improvement, reinforcing the decision.
The increase in production has led to the creation of 929 additional jobs, raising the total number of employees at the mining firm to 8,505. This expansion underscores First Quantum Minerals’ commitment to job creation and economic development in the region.
Anthony Mukutuma, the Director for Zambia at First Quantum Minerals, emphasized the company’s long-term dedication to the country. He noted that the commercialisation of the nickel project, along with the ongoing expansion efforts at other operations within Zambia, reflect this commitment.
Looking ahead, the company plans to complete the construction of a smelter plant by the first half of 2025, which will enable the commencement of ore processing. This development is expected to further bolster the company’s operations and contribute to the local economy.
The nickel project, along with the associated smelter plant, was approved in 2022 following the Zambian government’s commitment to mining sector reforms. These reforms aim to establish a more stable, sustainable, and responsible mining industry in the country.
First Quantum Minerals’ recent achievements and future plans are seen as a positive indicator of the potential for growth and development within Zambia’s mining sector, which remains a crucial component of the nation’s economy.
