Ethiopia’s manufacturing sector has experienced notable improvements in production capacity and employment generation, according to recent government reports. Industry Minister Melaku Alebel stated that targeted initiatives have elevated the sector’s production capacity from approximately 46% to 60% of the nation’s full potential in recent years.
This enhancement has positively impacted employment, with the manufacturing industry now providing over 156,000 jobs, marking a significant increase compared to previous years. Additionally, the proportion of domestically produced goods in Ethiopia’s market has risen from 30% to 40%, reducing reliance on imports.
Over the past decade, Ethiopia has developed numerous industrial parks nationwide, aiming to establish itself as Africa’s manufacturing hub. These efforts have attracted substantial foreign investment, particularly from Chinese enterprises. The Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation reports that Chinese investors constitute the largest group of foreign stakeholders in the country’s industrial parks.
The Ethiopian Investment Commission notes that Chinese investments have significantly bolstered the nation’s economic development, with approximately 3,309 Chinese projects contributing over 8.5 billion U.S. dollars. These ventures have created more than 325,400 permanent and temporary jobs for Ethiopians, aligning with the country’s socioeconomic objectives.
These developments underscore Ethiopia’s commitment to strengthening its manufacturing sector, enhancing self-sufficiency, and fostering economic growth through strategic investments and international partnerships.
