Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest carrier, has become the continent’s first airline to receive the Airbus A350-1000, a development that not only expands its fleet but also demonstrates its ambitions to cement a leadership role in African and global aviation.
The new aircraft, designated “Ethiopia: Land of Origins,” landed at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, greeted by senior airline executives and Airbus representatives. The A350-1000, the largest model in the A350 series, is set to bolster Ethiopian Airlines’ capacity to serve long-haul destinations across its global network, which spans five continents.
Mesfin Tasew, Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, underscored the strategic importance of the A350-1000 for the airline’s future. “With this addition, Ethiopian Airlines can strengthen its position as a leader in the African aviation sector and remain competitive globally,” Tasew noted at the welcoming event. The carrier plans to integrate four of these aircraft into its fleet over the next few months, a move anticipated to support growth in both passenger and cargo operations.
The A350-1000 offers a total of 395 seats across business and economy classes, making it Ethiopian Airlines’ largest passenger aircraft. The model’s advanced features—such as its aerodynamic design, carbon-fibre fuselage, and fuel-efficient technology—enable it to produce 25 percent fewer carbon dioxide emissions than previous twin-aisle aircraft. The environmental efficiencies of the A350-1000 are expected to align with Ethiopian Airlines’ broader goals for sustainable growth.
Hadi Akoum, Airbus’ representative at the ceremony, expressed the aircraft manufacturer’s enthusiasm for partnering with Ethiopian Airlines. “This aircraft represents a pivotal shift towards sustainability and premium service for Ethiopian Airlines, while also offering lower operating costs per seat,” Akoum stated, highlighting that the A350-1000 is designed to enhance operational efficiency and cater to premium business class demand.
Founded in 1946, Ethiopian Airlines has grown to command a prominent position in African air travel, operating a fleet of more than 150 aircraft to over 150 destinations globally. The airline’s expansion into the A350-1000 model reflects its long-term strategy of maintaining one of Africa’s youngest and most modern fleets, a cornerstone of its commitment to passenger satisfaction and operational resilience.
With this addition, Ethiopian Airlines signals a readiness to compete in an increasingly environmentally conscious aviation market, where the demand for reduced emissions is shaping both regulatory frameworks and consumer expectations. By integrating the A350-1000, Ethiopian Airlines continues to align its growth with global standards, showcasing Africa’s capacity to lead in the aviation sector.
