Ethiopian Airlines and DRC Government Partner to Launch Air Congo

Ethiopian Airlines and DRC Government Partner to Launch Air Congo

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s most prominent flag carrier, has announced a partnership with the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) government to establish Air Congo, a new airline set to bolster air connectivity across the Central African region. The announcement marks a pivotal moment for both entities, promising enhanced regional trade, investment, and socio-economic development.

According to a statement released by Ethiopian Airlines, the partnership will see the DRC government holding a 51-percent majority stake in Air Congo, with Ethiopian Airlines retaining a 49-percent share. The launch is part of the Ethiopian carrier’s broader strategy to foster collaboration with African governments to expand air transport infrastructure and connectivity within the continent.

Mesfin Tasew, Group Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines, described the development as a cornerstone of the airline’s strategic vision. “This partnership will provide greater connectivity for the DRC and Central Africa, facilitating investment, trade, and tourism, thereby contributing to the socio-economic growth of the region,” Tasew stated, acknowledging the DRC government’s commitment to the venture.

Initially, Air Congo will operate with two Boeing 737-800 aircraft, servicing domestic routes that connect seven airports within the DRC. This operational strategy underscores the ambition to establish a solid foundation for connectivity within one of Africa’s most resource-rich yet logistically challenging nations. Ethiopian Airlines, leveraging its extensive expertise, will oversee the management of the new airline, providing comprehensive technical support, leasing aircraft, and implementing systems support to ensure a seamless launch.

The collaboration also includes a commitment to human resource development. Ethiopian Airlines will train Congolese nationals in key aviation roles, including pilots, cabin crew, technicians, and service staff. This focus on skills transfer and local capacity building aligns with broader objectives of sustainable development and empowerment in Africa’s aviation sector.

Ethiopian Airlines’ expansionist strategy is evidenced by its history of forging similar partnerships across the continent. The carrier currently holds stakes in several African airlines, including Malawi Airlines, Zambia Airways, and Tchadia Airlines, underlining its commitment to bolstering intra-African air travel.

Air Congo’s launch comes amid growing demand for regional connectivity in Central Africa. The DRC, a country of immense geographical size and significant natural resources, has long struggled with limited transport infrastructure. The partnership is expected to alleviate some of these challenges by connecting major urban centres and remote areas, fostering economic activity and enhancing access for businesses and travellers.

The partnership, while promising, is not without its challenges. The aviation sector in Central Africa is often plagued by regulatory hurdles, operational inefficiencies, and infrastructure limitations. However, Ethiopian Airlines’ robust track record in navigating similar terrains suggests that the partnership is well-placed to deliver tangible results.

As Africa’s aviation industry continues to recover from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, collaborations like these highlight the continent’s potential for growth and resilience. The launch of Air Congo signals a significant stride towards an interconnected Africa, driven by homegrown partnerships and expertise.
