Ethiopia Rules Out Military Action in Pursuit of Seaport Access

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has firmly stated that Ethiopia will not resort to military confrontation with Eritrea to secure access to a seaport. Addressing the House of Peoples’ Representatives on Thursday, he emphasised that the government is committed to achieving maritime access through diplomatic negotiations with neighbouring countries.

Abiy highlighted the necessity of constructive dialogue based on mutual concessions, warning that rejecting negotiations could lead to detrimental long-term consequences. He reaffirmed that Ethiopia’s objective of securing access to the Red Sea is rooted in fostering regional cooperation and shared economic benefits, dismissing military engagement as a viable course of action.

This position underscores Ethiopia’s commitment to regional stability and its preference for diplomacy in addressing economic and trade-related matters.
