Dwin, The Stoic, a powerful figure in Nigeria’s music landscape, returns with his new album, Master of Ballads, solidifying his place in the industry. In a world where many artists come and go, Dwin’s persistence and energy stand out, resonating with audiences worldwide.
Known for his evocative storytelling and multi-genre compositions, Dwin is a versatile singer, songwriter, composer, and founder of St. Claire Records. With millions of streams across platforms, his work has been featured in high-profile productions, including Netflix’s Far From Home and Disney+’s Madu.
Master of Ballads follows a string of successful projects, including his 2020 debut album The Cost of Our Lives with Ignis Brothers, widely acclaimed as one of the top Nigerian albums of the year. His 2023 collaborative EP Love Lane with Rhaffy has garnered over 3 million streams, further establishing Dwin as a force in Nigeria’s indie music scene.
Reflecting on the album, Dwin shares his connection to the “Master of Ballads” persona he’s embodied over the years. “This project represents years of creativity and reflection. The ‘Master of Ballads’ is a persona I’ve lived with for a long time, and this album captures his journey and mine as we navigate themes of love and loss. I’m excited for listeners to experience these stories and emotions across such diverse soundscapes.” While many of the album’s stories are drawn from his own experiences, there’s also “a lot of fictional world-building in the album,” he says, describing how the character brings universal themes of love, life, and grief to the forefront in a way that feels both deeply personal and widely relatable.
In Master of Ballads, Dwin weaves together soul, R&B, hip-hop, and electronic music. “I’ve always loved creating multi-genre albums,” he explains. “Because my music explores themes like life, love, death, grief, and loss, it’s essential to provide listeners with a rich, diverse tapestry.” This variety makes the album approachable, appealing to listeners across different moods and experiences.
The song selection on the album was carefully curated, highlighting the complexities of human emotion. “The songs developed organically,” Dwin reveals. “Some were written this year, others recorded as far back as 2019. When curating the album, we saw that each song told the story of two people dealing with life and love in unique ways.” This organic approach allows the album’s themes to resonate with a heartfelt honesty.
The album’s lead track, “Time is Money,” is a highlife anthem that Dwin first performed as a freestyle in 2018. Finally produced in 2023, the song debuted at Dwin’s recent sold-out show at Lagos’s iconic MUSON Centre. The infectious tune, grounded in his Igbo heritage and love for writing love songs, captivated the audience. “The first time I freestyled it was in 2018 or 2019 at a small show,” Dwin recalls. “By the time we performed it live at MUSON in September, it was fully produced. Seeing the entire crowd dancing along showed me we had something special.” It serves as a reminder that sometimes creativity flows best without overthinking.
Collaborations on Master of Ballads were meticulously selected to complement Dwin’s sound, with guest features from talented artists like Lindsey Abudei, Ruka, Ogranya, and Kate Bass. “Because my music is so honest, I look for collaborators who are deeply passionate about music and immensely talented,” Dwin explains. These collaborations bring added depth and variety, amplifying the album’s impact.
Since his early work, Dwin’s artistic vision has evolved greatly. Master of Ballads marks a new chapter, showcasing his growth as both a musician and a producer. “I’m incredibly proud of the wide soundscape we were able to explore,” he says. “I know this album will inspire further exploration, both for us and for the listeners it reaches.”
Dwin is a true polymath in music. A producer, singer, composer, and label owner, he juggles these roles seamlessly, motivated by his passion. “I want to build one of the most recognizable record labels out of Africa,” he shares. “We aim to be the home for versatile artists and creatives who go on to have long, fulfilling careers.”
For the younger generation, Dwin offers this advice: “Stay true to your art. Knowing why you’re doing it is crucial. The world needs your art, but it needs to be authentically yours.” He emphasizes the value of authenticity in pursuing one’s creative path.
With Master of Ballads freshly released, Dwin shows no sign of slowing down. He’s already planning his next creative pursuits. “I’m excited to dive into filmmaking next year,” he says. “I look forward to bringing my fans into a world of beautiful new creations.”
Dwin, The Stoic’s Master of Ballads is a testament to his growth and innovation—a masterpiece destined to make an impact on the music industry and inspire future generations.
