South Africa’s largest diamond mine, De Beers, a subsidiary of Anglo American Plc (AAL.L), is engaging in ongoing negotiations with the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the country’s most prominent mineworkers’ union. The talks come as NUM considers strike action due to a wage dispute.
NUM had recently announced its intention to stage a strike at Venetia, citing dissatisfaction with De Beers’ offer of a 6% pay increase, which fell short of their demand for a 9% raise. The strike, if carried out, would have a significant impact on operations at Venetia’s new $2.3 billion underground facilities, which commenced production in July. De Beers had ceased its 30-year open pit operations at Venetia in December 2022.
De Beers revealed that it convened a meeting with NUM representatives on September 6, facilitated by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), a statutory body responsible for mediating labor disputes. In a statement, De Beers expressed confidence in achieving a sustainable resolution through continued dialogue with the union and its employees.
The mining company emphasized that the diamond industry is grappling with “challenging market conditions” that are affecting its operations, possibly adding complexity to the negotiations.
NUM, on the other hand, has not yet provided a response or comment regarding the ongoing negotiations.
De Beers is pursuing a five-year wage agreement with its workers, a move aimed at securing operational stability during the transition to underground mining, which aims to achieve an annual production of 4 million carats. This production goal represents approximately 12% of the group’s projected output for the year 2023.
The outcome of these negotiations will be closely monitored by both the diamond industry and labor unions, with potential implications for the broader mining sector in South Africa. Amidst economic challenges and evolving industry dynamics, finding common ground in wage negotiations becomes crucial for the sustainability of operations and the well-being of the workforce.
